Black and White

Working in greyscale is an interesting exercise. You can certainly learn a good deal about value this way. I seem to be in a black and white mode these days.
This year's block challenge at Joseph Schneider Haus in Kitchener was themed "Memories in Black and White" Each year a quilt is made from submitted blocks that will later be raffled as a fundraising project. This is the block I submitted. It is done completely with black, white and grey fabrics. I chose to design and hand applique a block using my version of Forget-Me-Nots.I made the best use I could with the few prints I had. The "buds"are almost all a bit different even though they came from the same fabric. The main flower's centers were created by being very selective about cutting this Mark Lipinski print. As you can see, I never hesitate to cut holes in the middle of a piece of fabric

lovely. fun use of prints too. fyi: I went to the Schneider Haus last month when I was in Kitchener and I saw the postcard collection with your quilt in it. I also went to St. Peter's Lutheran to see the big hanging designed by Nancy Lou Patterson.

And that's why you get such stunning results (by cutting into the middle of a fabric). This is going to be a beautiful part of the quilt.

Love the B&W!!! And yes, I still have many pieces of fabric with strategically placed *holes*...LOL!
And I have friends who would NEVER do that....but hey, if it works, use it!

I love the fact that you will cut a hole in the middle of the fabric to create a wonderful piece. I love your black and white applique. It has an incredible feel!

I am loving your work in gray, black and white. It really makes me use my colorful imagination to see the flowers in what my mind thinks they should be. The simplicity of this intricate appliqued block will be stunning in the finished quilt for charity. Marvelous May to you...

I've been mentally cutting holes in dresses and shirts and curtains for years. Usually the unsuspecting soul is sitting in front of me at some event and I am comforting my bored self with thoughts creative. Thanks for the inspiration. What?! You mean I can really cut holes. Yahoo!
