Seeing BUGS

I have been stitching bugs and unlike most quilters I don't seem to have a large collection of thread, I think this is going to have to change. Some of them have been stitched using regular embroidery floss and I am finding that since this piece is being handled a lot, the thread is looking a bit "hairy", not liking this at all. You can see what I mean with this spider and flying insect. Then I began using a single strand of some machine embroidery threads I have, they look like rayon but are actually polyester. I have stitched them in a style similar to Kantha stitching inspired by a piece Bev White showed us. Here they have been done in positive/negative for a rather interesting effect.

I have now added a very thin layer of batting and plan to do some hand quilting on this piece. Great for relaxing outside on the deck.

Your stitching is exquisite. I see what you mean by the floss getting hairy however there are many hairy spiders. The positive negative are truly interesting. This is the perfect reason to expand your thread collection. :o) Marvelous May to you...

Love the positive/negative effect. You know, DMC cotton embroidery floss doesn't "beard" like your floss seems to be doing. If the cotton is mercerized, it should be smooth when stitched. I'd be happy to send you a skein, if you don't have access to that brand.

As always, your work is phenomenal.

Your stitching is wonderful.....try using perle #8 thread as it does not get hairy with handling.....can't wait to see this little quilt finished.....

Your bug-catcher quilt is lovely. You might try silk to stitch with it's lovely. I guess you draw your bugs first?

Your hand work is great. I'm not very good at hand embroidery. Love the 2 color backgrounds - great inspirations.

Hi! A little advice....When using delicate thread use a shorter piece of thread...this will minimize the times the thread has to go in and out of the cloth and stop fraying....Here are some lovely threads form a great company in Canada...www.treenwaysilks.com

Very cool hairy creatures...I think that is how they look in real life! They are not shiny and flat...they are hairy and 3D...great job! Doesn't it creep you out to stitch the bugs?!?
