Doodled Hexagons

Recently, I have begun noticing these Millefliore and Passacaglia quilts popping up in the cyber world. They are amazingly beautiful and I am most intrigued.

Having never tried English paper piecing, I decided it was time to give it a try. I picked up a package of 1" hexie papers and set about making a rosette. (my very first one) so I kept it plain and simple to make sure I understood the technique)

Then a thought popped into my head........what would happen if I doodled on each hexagon before putting them together?
Now, of course, you KNOW I had to test that idea

I drew some "guidelines" on the fabric to make sure the drawing would end up in the right spot ( I used a Frixion pen for this as I will want them gone later)

Doodled with a permanent marker
Added colour
Ready to assemble

I made sure to brush the paint over the "fold" lines so I would not have any "blank" spots

Finished ....Doodled-Painted Hexagon Rosette

Not perfect, but certainly interesting results...... Something tells me I will be doing more of these!!!

This is so so so fabulous! I clicked through because I too have been seeing the fussy cut hexie piecing everywhere and love them. I like EPP but I'm never precise enough to fussy cut, but your doodled hexies are so so perfect! What a great idea!

Oh, Jill -- words fail me . . . but not for too long, because I must tell you what a constant source of inspiration you are. These last two projects you've posted are nothing short of brilliant. I love EPP but haven't been able to stay with a project long enough to keep my interest. This idea is spectacular -- I cannot wait to try it.

I have a list of projects on my wall that are awaiting my attempts, and nearly all of them were created and perfected by you. I wish we could spend a week together so that I could soak in your creativity. What talent you have -- you never cease to amaze me. Bless your creative soul.

What a genius of an idea. You have set the bar high with your very first attempt. Not sure I would want to do this on 1" hexagons, but I can certainly see the embellishment potential in floral quilt, winter scene with oversized snow flakes, etc. See how you have my mind racing?

Wowsers! Those look fabulous. What a great way to do both of your passions, drawing and quilting! Thanks for the lovely comment you left on my blog about, as Gail aka Cozy Quilter, calls it my “monster”. For some reason your comment didn’t come through into my email. Be warned, English Paper piecing is addictive, as I have found, to my delight!
