Feathers, Feathers, and more Feathers

I LOVE the look of beautiful, graceful curving feathers on quilts but for some reason, drawing/designing them has mystified me. I am determined to be able to do them on my domestic machine, so I have been practising on paper by filling shapes and spaces with feathers. Here are a few that I have drawn.I stitched out a couple as well. This is going to take more practice but I WILL conquer the feather!

I have spent more time drawing than sewing this week. Here is my response to last week's prompt word ........... Celebration.

I, too, love feathers. Your idea of practicing on paper is really good -- they really do improve with practice. I like to mark just the spine on my quilts and then freehand the feathers. This gives me a guide and then I can concentrate on filling the space.

Beautiful feathers. It looks to me like you are on the right track.
I need to practice more. I bought a dry erase board last month, but still haven't used it. Good luck with your feathering. ;)

Great paper feathers, and your stitched ones are awsome too.

Great feather work! Did you free motion your feathers? The stitching is so very even!

Your feathers are beautiful! Funny I can't do them very well on paper! I do better on fabric with the machine..but I still don't think they look as good as yours. Very nice job!!

I love the idea of practicing feathers by drawing and then practicing on your machine. The teacher from the class I took on longarming said that we should practice drawing our designs to develop muscle memory.

I love the hat and horn. Perfect!

I practice motifs on a dry erase board too. Actually, mine is a small circle dry erase board. I can carry it to anywhere in the house to practice with.

I have not gotten anywhere as good at feathering as you have. You are off to a great start! And they DO add so much grace to so many quilts.

As always, your CPP work brings a smile. :)

Your feathers - both drawn and sewn - are wonderful. Your inner critic is too harsh. Happy creating...
